UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA HONORS THESIS
Equal access to theater education in K-12 public schools in Florida
This paper explores the imperative role of theater in K-12 education and advocates for policy reform to make theater education equitably accessible within the Florida school system. In this paper, I draw upon the work of Augusto Boal and Kathleen Gallagher as well as my own experience as an instructor and learner in Theater for Health practices. This paper begins by referencing the longstanding history of theater practices in relation to democracy, emphasizing theater’s essential place in the evolution of civil society. I posit that theater's absence would fundamentally undermine the democratic structure, opposing the foundation of the United States of America. Shifting focus to the accessibility of theater education in the Florida public school system, this paper examines the funding distribution mechanisms of Florida's Department of Education, revealing stark economic disparities. By highlighting the relationship between household income and access (or lack of access) to theater programs, this study critically examines the socio-economic inequities that result in the removal of theater arts education programs, especially in underfunded districts. I then contextualize theater as an essential source for the development of academic and social-emotional skills, offering that theater education nurtures students to become responsible global citizens. I conclude with a call to action, proposing a revised state-wide funding disbursement system and revisions to curricula to provide equitable access to theater education. This plan includes forging partnerships with local theater arts organizations to enrich the curriculum and foster community engagement.
